About
Dollar and a Vision:
I, Génesis Zárate Guerrero, am the founder of Chillona Cosmetics. I founded Chillona Cosmetics at the age of 17 and launched on February 12, 2021. I have always had a passion for makeup and all things beauty ever since I could remember. I would watch my mama do her makeup in the mirror everyday before she went to work and admire her for her beauty and creativity. I wanted to do my makeup to look like my mami so bad, and I would go into her makeup como traviesa and try to recreate her looks. There was even one point where she had to hide them from me cause I would steal her things, but I found a loophole of doing my “makeup” with my markers…which I do not recommend, but you can see how much makeup meant to me lol. I vividly remember the first makeup product she ever bought me was a little roller lipgloss from the local 97 cents store. I always dreamed of owning my own beauty company, so I made it happen all with a dollar and a vision.
Why “Chillona”?:
The reason as to why I chose the name “Chillona” was because it was my nickname as a child. I had “sad eyes” and I would always cry as a child, I still do, and that was the nickname I was given. I’ve been a sad girl since day one. What can I say? I used to hate being called a chillona, but now I wear it with pride. However, I may be a part-time chillona, but I am a full-time chingona. So don’t get it twisted. Always remember that every chillona gotta stay chingona. I think it is powerful how I’m a chillona, but once I put on a lash or lip my switch flips to chingona. A lot of the mujeres in my life are like this as well. I feel like a lot of you can relate to that too. I wanted ‘“Chillona Cosmetics” to resonate with us and our stories.
Para mi Gente:
Growing up and I saw my mama, abuelas, tias, primas, and all the women in my community always have their signature looks. They stayed looking fly. From having their lips lined, eyebrows thinned, and wings sharp. Our culturas beauty rituals are sacred to us. It’s our war paint that we put on everyday to go out into the world and live the lives we live. The products and techniques they would use are some that I still use to this today. I wanted to create a brand that celebrated and captured our culturas beauty rituals. Within the beauty industry we never see women who look like us, who speak like us, who live like us, and come from similar places. I wanted my brand to honor our Chicana, Mexicana, and Indigenous roots. I want my brand to be for the gente. So, since not many other companies had this value I decided to make my own. I did it all with hustle and heart.
Bruta Babies:
My dream would not be possible without the support of my locals! I started off local and have now branched through my website. The constant amor and support I receive from my bruta babies is sacred to me. My brand is influenced by the cultura that surrounded me in Santa Barbara, California. As well as Ventura and Oxnard since I also grew up there. So a special little shoutout to all my 805 babies! Thank you to everyone who has followed ChillonaCosmetic’s journey and I hope you stay for the ride because she’s still got a lot more in store.
